Yoga Girls BFF – How I became Rachel Brathens Best friend. (A true story)

This post is better than that time I appeared on The ELLEN SHOW, and better than that time our wedding dress adventures appeared on the Independent online and the Daily Mail. This post is about the time I became YOGA GIRL’S BFF. (A true story).

First, let me introduce you to my wonderful parents – Graham and Dee –

Graham and Dee decided to head off on a cruise around the Caribbean over Christmas last year. Their itinerary included a stop over at some of the most exotic locations and beautiful islands. They called me one day to excitedly tell me all their cruise destinations.

They began listing them: Tulum Mexico, Mexico City, Playa del Carmen, Paradisus la Perla, Cayman Island, Jamaica, Aruba…

Me: No, she’s not one of my friends – she’s from “INSTAGRAM”

Me: No, she doesn’t follow me on instagram. She’s FAMOUS on instagram.

(Oh sweet).

Me: No dad – she’s like really FAMOUS. She has like two million people following her.

Me: No, dad – she does not. She’s like FAMOUS FAMOUS, (we’ve been through this).

Dad: Oh, ok.

And then the very next logical thing –

(Fan-girled. Couldn’t help myself)

* * *

So anyway, as my parents were leaving through the airport in South Africa I get a frantic call from my mother asking what “THE YOGA GIRL” would like for her present.

Me: I don’t know! I don’t know her!
(I mean, I totally know her and everything she does with her dog and her baby and her goat and her husband.)

Mom: Ok, what about an African wildlife calendar – you know – from South Africa and all.

Me: errm.
(I’m pretty sure Yoga Girl is not into random wildlife calendars from stangers)

Mom: Well what about an African beaded bracelet?

Me: Errm… I don’t know about this mom.

Mom: I will get one for you too.

(Side note: am 32)

Mom: Ok, I’m just going to get the calendar as well. She will really like this calendar. It’s VERY nice.

(my mom now also knows yoga girl very well.)

So my parents set off on their cruise laden with African beaded bracelets and a VERY nice calendar.

My dad also took it upon himself to post an instagram post to Yoga girl explaining that they were coming to visit:

When I shared this post on my insta stories – people cracked up!

Also, not having the trust in the social media message getting through – they went old school too and wrote a letter on some of the cruise liner letter pads they found:

So then one Saturday morning right around Christmas time I get a call from my parents –

Mom: Ché! Ché! We are in the island yoga place! We are about to see THE YOGA GIRL!
Dad: It’s very busy in here and this call is costing me a LOT of money.
Mom: It’s very beautiful in here! I see the Yoga Girl has a book! Do you have her book?

(of course I have her book)

Me: I can’t believe you are there! Ok well send me some pictures!!

And so they sent me some pictures of the glorious Island Yoga

and THEN they got to meet the one and only RACHEL BRATHEN coming out the studio –

and then they fan-girled for me while I sat in London –

* * *

A few days after the whole episode – I decided to share these pics on my instagram account

AND THEN –

And that’s how ya do it, people:

That’s how you become BFFs with YOGA GIRL –

All it takes is some uber dedicated parents, an African bracelet and a VERY nice calendar.

* the end *

PS. I’m planning to single-handedly level up this friendship, or maybe I will aim to BFF Ellen too – (she does not have a VERY nice calendar yet, so the route in may be quicker).
I will keep you posted: Follow along here.

    I love this post, Che. You are so funny. This story made my day and gave me some laughs. Thank you. (Good luck with Ellen. I’m picturing her on stage with an African wildlife calendar standing beside your parents.)
