Medichecks Well Woman Ultra Vit Blood test Review

On the Kombucha and Colour podcast we often talk about optimising your health through rest, sleep and good nutrition. I’ve eaten a predominantly fish and plant based diet for the last 5 years, which can sometimes be low in vitamin B12 so I thought it would be a good idea to check in with some blood works to check for levels of iron, B12 and proteins.

Anna, who is a functional medicine practitioner often recommends Medichecks to her clients when recommending blood work as they provide a really comprehensive test which gives a whole host of important info.

We thought then that it would be a fun episode idea for me to go through the Medichecks testing process and then have her analyse my results through her functional medicine lens, live on the show.

I contacted Vanessa at Medichecks and asked if they would be interested in sponsoring a show – and they decided that yes, they did want to partner with us and so I opted to be sent a Well Woman Ultra Vit test kit.

Medichecks Well Woman Ultra Vit test kit.

The kit arrived in the mail, exactly as it would if you were to order from the site. Inside the test kit are very specific and simple instructions for you to follow to book your blood test and the steps following.

Some tests require fasting before you take the test, so I hopped onto the Medichecks website to check and was helped by their very efficient customer chat help desk.

After creating an account on the Medichecks website, I found a Medichecks test clinic near to me – mine happened to be at the local Balham superdrug – so I made an appointment and then arrived for the test.

I have to say, I was rather nervous on arrival – as I’ve never really given blood or had bloods taken before (that I can remember) – so I engaged full drama queen mode and ensured I had enough SNACKS to replenish me after.

I met with the very friendly nurse and told her how VERY nervous I was – the following ensued:

And then we both had a good ol’ LOL at what a drama queen I am.

(So as an aside, from one drama queen to the next, if the idea of pain is putting you off getting your bloods sampled, I can assure you, it really is a tiny scratch. )

Once the samples were taken, the nurse – who was super helpful and friendly showed me what needed to be sent off and packaged it all up for me and then I headed off to the Post Office.

The kit itself has a postage-paid envelope which you can just drop off at your local post office, or pop into a post-box. (I have gotta say, even though I walked passed several post boxes on my way to the Post Office, there is something about dropping your blood into a Post Box that made me feel a bit weird – so I felt like I needed to rather hand it over to a person! haha)

TIP: It is recommended that you book your appointment as early in the morning as possible so that you have adequate time to get to the Post Office – so that it can be shipped as soon as possible. (No-one wants their blood congealing in the Post Box!) For the same reason it is not advisable to have blood work done on a Saturday as there is no one in the lab to receive it on Sunday.

In about 3 days I received an email from Medichecks to say my results were in – and I was strangely excited about seeing them all! I logged in to my account where you could see a super comprehensive overview of the entire test as well as a note from the Doctor who has also reviewed it. Having an account is super helpful as it gives you an entire history and personal dashboard of your previous testing, as well as any recommendations for future testing – in my case a Vitamin D test was recommended.

On the recommendation of Medichecks and with Anna looking over the test results too, I have been taking a Vitamin D (aka sunshine drops) every morning before breakfast as well as a Zinc supplement. I’ve also been paying so much attention to my gut health… so I’m excited to see if and how these results change with a bit more focus on good nutrition, appropriate supplementation and supporting my gut.

That’s also another reason why it’s so valuable to have your bloods tested before embarking on any big change in diet/health kick. It’s really useful to know what your baseline is so that when you DO make good changes for your health – you can actually track it and have evidence that what you are doing is actually working to create optimal health for you – so that you can live a high vibe life!

The information that I received has been really useful to me in terms of my red blood cell information and vitamin B12 levels – and knowing what I know now about what my body is needing, has given me some real motivation to ensure that I am eating well to really support MY own body and it’s unique needs. I will definitely be checking back in with another test down the line to see if things have optimised. (And I can see how this type of testing can REALLY become addictive!)

Apart from using a test like Medichecks to create really optimal health for yourself – you can also use this type of blood testing to get deeper information and insight on anything that may be causing issues in your health.

When I shared on Instagram that I was using Medichecks to check for B12 levels – one of the women following me mentioned that she had used them to test for low Folate levels and Vitamin D when she was struggling with miscarriages.

My experience with Medichecks has really made me reflect on the fact that we can do so much “work” – inner work, spiritual work, relationship work, soul work -and yes this work is all on the “inside” but really it’s also very much on the “outside”! Having blood tests done is TRULY inner work!!

We can start to really know our minds and emotions inside out… and yet for many of us – how well do we know our BODIES inside and out? This very thing that is carrying us through life? We may know that certain foods make us feel good and others less so based on symptoms we experience – but do we really know how our red blood cells are doing? What about white blood cells? And what’s your immune system up to these days? What about your liver? What’s REALLY going on with your hormones? Thyroid? Vitamin levels?

This testing has been so valuable for me to identify some key areas of concern, some places where I can easily implement supplements and ways that I can support my gut for vitality and energy. If you are interested in boosting your energy, brain fog, fatigue and well being and giving yourself some tangible motivation to make changes to your diet and lifestyle then I cannot recommend this testing enough!
