Unleash your creativity – a step by step art journal DIY

A STEP BY STEP ART JOURNAL DIY

My aim for this site is to provide you with inspiration to connect back to YOU.

That means connecting back to your body, connecting back to this moment, connecting back to your soul, unleashing your creativity and connecting back to the things that bring your lives to life!

In the MOVE BREATHE CREATE members area this coming season – we are exploring PATTERNS. That ranges from the Mental patterns we get stuck in (and how to break free from them), yoga flows to counteract the physical patterns that are showing up in the modern body (ie: weak glutes from sitting for so long! and text neck from staring at our devices all day long!), correcting breathing patterns and then all the way through to exploring creative patterning in art and design plus a gorgeous Mandala DIY pattern tutorial.

Patterns are things that repeat. Again and again and again – until they are really entrenched.

Sometimes this is a good thing (creating stability, structure, a sense of consistency) and sometimes it becomes a negative thing.

As a little teaser for all the awesomeness coming in this season on the platform, I thought it would be fun to share a pattern tutorial here on the blog as it’s something you can try right now!

All you need is:

  • a blank piece of paper/your journal
  • and a pen or pencil.

(I taped some patterned washi tape at the top of my page to cover some markers that were showing through from the page before – but you don’t need to add washi tape if you don’t have!)

STEP ONE:

Think of a simple object.

I chose a chair – (as I thought it would be interesting with it’s angles and geometry!)  you could also choose a table, a book, an apple, a pair of scissor, an egg and egg-cup, a knife and fork – whatever!)
Start by outlining a very simple shape of your object – as I’ve done above. If you’ve used pencil – go over the object in pen.

STEP TWO:

Repeat the object, allowing it to overlap the first one slightly.
Notice: my second chair does look slightly different to the first one – that’s ok. (After seeing the first one, I wasn’t quite sure on the angles of the legs so decided to play around without them!)

STEP THREE:

Repeat the object again – this time I played with a slightly different perspective.

STEP FOUR:

Repeat the object again, this time flipping your piece of paper upside down so that you are drawing from a different direction.

STEP FIVE:

Keep going – repeating, repeating and repeating. Allow the drawings to overlap one another – think about drawing the object from a different direction/different angle/different perspective.

Repeat until the whole page is filled with your overlapping object.

It’s important to remember that it’s not about the outcome or what each object looks individually. (In fact, if you look at some of my individual chairs you will see they actually look NOTHING like chairs!) The point is to create pattern through repetition as well as through positive and negative space and seeing what comes up at the end!
