Tumeric and ginger tea recipe – make it at home!

tumeric drink recipe

If you’re tuned into the health and wellness world at all, you may have heard that Tumeric is having it’s moment in the limelight as a superfood for it’s anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. I also heard while I was on my training in India how good Tumeric is for Alzheimers. “The-story-goes” that Tumeric forms such a large part of the Indian diet in many regions and co-incidentally they also have an older population of people who have almost zero instances of Alzheimers and Dementia. “The-story-also-goes” that some big US Pharma companies wanted in some way to patent/trademark the Tumeric for it’s healing properties, but Indian government asked for it to be revoked.

So anyway, the secret little power ingredient of Tumeric is good for you.

I’ve tried making a few different Tumeric tea elixirs most of which have contained cinnamon and a nut-milk of some sort, and I’ve always had a teeny bit of resistance towards it (and also when I see things on menus like “Tumeric latte”) – because the larger part of me is thinking,

“Don’t try and fool me, I know 100% this is NOT coffee.”

And then begins the resistance. ha.

So, the other day, as I was coming out the tail end of a cold that just wasn’t leaving, I saw Naomi Absalom share on her instagram account a recipe for Tumeric tea that had no nut milks and rather some apple cider vinegar, I was so eager to try it (and kill the cold) that I went straight away to the kitchen to whip up some magic.

Below is my concotion based on Naomi’s recommendation

I made enough just for one mug of Tumeric tea (ya know – trialing it out an’ all) but I enjoyed it so much that I’ve had a mug almost every day since.

Ingredients For one mug of Tumeric Drink

1-2 teaspoon of Tumeric powder (Naomi uses actual fresh Tumeric root, but ya know – we are a bit more gangster around these parts)

Small knob of fresh ginger

1 tablespoon Apple Cider Vinegar (ours I initially found in the cupboard was 3 years old – EDIT: My husband came home distressed to see that I’ve been ingesting 3 year old vinegar so he subsequently brought home new vinegar.)

Grind of black pepper

Hot Water to fill the mug.

Method:

Pop your 1 to 2 teaspoons (start with one and then add more if you need!) of Tumeric powder (or grate fresh Tumeric root, if you’re extra) into your mug.
Grate the small knob of ginger over the mug. The more ginger you grate, the zingier it will be.

Grind a few black peppercorns into the mug.

Pour in 1 tablespoon of Apple Cider vinegar.
Mix it all up.

Top up the rest of your mug with boiled water that has cooled slightly.

It’s quite useful to pour your water over the grater so that the extra bits of ginger can flow into the mug!

Drink up and feel ALL your ailments, sniffles, sneezes, coughs, aches, pains, joint-issues, inflammations, tiredness, fogginess, alzheimers, dementias and ex-boyfriends melt away.*

Let me know if you try this (or leave a comment for Naomi) and what you think! I really love the Apple Cider vinegar in this and it’s definitely been a good alternative to coffee for me in the mornings!

*May not help cure all things, but good for you none-the-less.
