Postnatal self-massage with Yogandha Oils

During my pregnancy, Yogandha Oils got in touch asking if I’d like to try some of their products. Knowing I was pregnant -they sent over the Yogandha relax multipurpose on and the Yogandha Balance oil stick whic form part of the “for her” package and told me that they would be suitable for me to use only after 36 weeks pregnant – as a kind of preparation for birth.

Well I had always anticipated that baby would arrive well after the due date so I was pretty delayed in opening up and using the oils – and the next thing baby arrived! So I never even had a chance to try them out before our precious little bundle entered the world and put regular life on pause. But I’m pretty glad I never used up the oils before as it was such a lovely treat to open post baby and I’ve now had such a wonderful self-care ritual including these oils that I’ve been able to use in the postpartum period.

I made a little pledge to myself whilst pregnant to love, cherish and appreciate my postpartum body just as much as my pregnant body and having these oils as part of my self care practice has been such a lovely way to honour this pledge as we navigate this fourth trimester.

The first product I’ve been using is the Yogandha Relax oil. It’s a multi purpose oil and I’ve been using this as a self massage over my stomach – helping to bring some warmth and touch to this area encouraging the womb to contract back down as it has been. The oil is not greasy and absorbs easily into the skin which I’m a big fan of. The fragrance of this oil is a combination of Lavendar, Vetiver and Frankincense – and this scent brings back such powerful memories for me as Frankincense was one of the oils that our Doula gave to me doused on a cloth for me to breathe into during labour and a strong lavender candle was burning in our room throughout. Scent is such a powerful way to invoke a memory!

I’ve been using the oil as part of a self massage and “me time” and it’s such a lovely ritual to gift myself after a shower! As a new mom there is a lot of touch going outwards – so it feels very nourishing to reinvest that touch towards myself! Especially during lockdown where we perhaps aren’t having that much physical contact with others.

The other product is a rollerball stick which is such a wonderful oil to use as a daily scent. This is such a good pocket size blend to bring a bit of peace and calm to your day – easy enough to fit into a handbag or purse. Even the simple act of taking out the ball, rolling it on your skin and then taking a moment to breathe it in deeply, can be very grounding! So good for these uncertain times we are moving through! I can also see this being very useful for any new mom who is having to navigate a stressful “explosive-poo” situation whilst out on a walk!

When the world returns to “normal” again, this would also be such a wonderful addition to the yoga teacher toolbox as an oil to use for students in Savasana – either simply to place on your own wrists and let students breathe it in as you hold your hands above their face or as a head massage – aah remember those days!

It is so lovely to include a bit of ritual into your day – especially when we are in lock down and need some kind of way to bookend our days. Or as a new mom to create some simple ‘me time’ and self care. What I love about Yogandha is that you can really tell the quality of the oils – so it feels that even though it’s a very simple act of applying oil in massage it feels super luxurious! I’m looking forward to using some of these oils on Logan’s feet for baby massage!
